Our obstetrical /perinatal pathology service covers three hospitals: Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, and Sharp Grossmont Hospital. The combined service is active, performing 14,000 – 15,000 deliveries per year.
Diagnostic services are provided for all tissue specimens delivered or removed during pregnancy, labor, delivery and the neonatal period. The specimens include the placenta, the gravid uterus, the fetus, and the newborn infant.
Approximately 300 placentas are examined each month. We also provide all services necessary for the complete postmortem evaluation of the fetus and newborn (approximately 8 autopsy examinations performed each month).
The diagnostic service also covers several rare pregnancy-related tumors and conditions that collectively are known as ‘gestational trophoblastic disease.’
Finally, we support a regional consultation service that provides both primary diagnoses and second opinions. The consultation service is available to hospitals, physicians and lawyers.
